相比于TOS更具有人文主义气息，不少剧情都在探讨思想与价值层面的议题（全息甲板的引入直接就脱离背景搞起了剧中剧），以至于前半季某些集数直接靠嘴炮就解决问题，到后半季才更有科幻剧的样子。本剧也有了更多当代美剧的特点，比如女性角色增多，出现主演半途领便当的情况等等。
